Oxford is filled with opportunities for anyone active to spend time outside, enjoying the many recreational areas. Among the city’s many areas ideal for any outdoor-lover is the newly built Oxford Area Trails. This trail system provides a paved path for walkers, joggers and bikers to enjoy.
Over 100 Oxford residents came out, despite the rainy day, to see the Grand Opening of the Oxford Area Trails in mid-June.
The trail system was proposed as a way to provide Oxford with a recreational path that would bring the community together in an active way. A group of Oxford residents, along with help from city planners and Enjoy Oxford, has been working since the late 1990’s to find funding for this trail system.
The first phase of the trail, The Black Bridge Connector, was funded by a $500,000 Clean Ohio grant through the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. The paved path is 1.25 miles and connects Kelly Dr. to Bonham Rd. At Bonham Rd. you can continue on a crushed stone path and travel all the way to the DeWitt Log House and St. Rt. 73. On the Kelly Dr. side, a five foot sidewalk, funded by McCullough Hyde Memorial Hospital, will be added in August, connecting Sycamore St. to Kelly Dr.
The second phase of the trail is scheduled for 2019 and is funded by a grant from OKI Regional Council of Governments. This section of the trail, the Miami Connector, will cross Four Mile Creek via a pedestrian bridge, and create a paved path under St. Rt. 73 over to St. Rt. 27 at Peffer Park.
Once complete, the trail system will circle the City of Oxford and connect many key points in our community. The trail committee is still working to raise additional required funds for the remaining phases of the trail. Any ideas for funding are welcomed by the committee, as members are working hard to expand the trail to connect more key points of interest in Oxford.
